Show Notes
In this episode, we have Molly Christensen, a life coach and mentor for parents. She is a mother of 7 children, a 20-year-old homeschool veteran, and an entrepreneur. Her life goal is to help parents lead their children through their journeys as the Building Heroes Academy founder. Today, Molly guides parents on how to deal with bored kids.
Boredom
[0:50]
Our definition of boredom is life is tedious, dull, and not engaging. However, Molly explains that boring could have a different meaning to kids. It could describe a whole range of feelings, or they have had much passive entertainment. It could also mean that they are uncomfortable with their thoughts or feelings, having a hard time focusing, or do not have various activities in life.
Overcoming boredom
[2:55]
To overcome boredom, most people do passive activities to take the feeling of boredom away. However, Molly insists that this method is not effective as this is only a temporary measure unless the source of the emotion is identified.
[3:25]
When kids are bored, this may become a source of unknown energy, and they must direct it elsewhere.
[3:46]
A podcast called “The Way of the Warrior Kid” tackles the questions that kids had turned in. One question that Molly liked was what a kid should do when they are feeling bored. The host’s answered that boredom means that you are too much in your comfort zone, and you need to find another activity to pour your energy into.
[6:31]
Molly explains just like it is good to have emotions; it is not harmful to be bored. However, we must recognize what emotion is. It is much better if parents could teach their children the concept that boredom is a signal and that it is time to choose where they should direct their energy.
Parents’ responsibility
[8:45]
Molly believes that it is not the parents’ responsibility to keep their children entertained. However, parents must instill that happiness that does not come from outside sources, and their children must be the ones who shall generate their joy.
[13:32]
From the story that Molly read, she learned the ways of how to get rid of boredom. First, one must change their environment. Second, get out into nature as nature is surprisingly healing, and nature knows what to do with our energy. Lastly, choose a goal or a journey to go on to. Little things you could do today may help keep you progressing on that path.
